A journey through 1940s Milan
the project“Quando La Radio” brings 1940s Milan to life through the most intimate voice of the era: the radio. Neither documentary nor fiction, the production blends historical knowledge with live music and personal stories passed down through families.
Through the eyes of Matteo, a young worker who's lived in Milan his whole life, we follow a city shifting through war, propaganda, and resistance. His constant companion: the lying, comforting, dangerous and essential Radio.
The play blends live swing performances by The McKeeney Sisters with authentic historical recordings, creating an immersive journey where music and memory collide.
the teamAt the heart of the production are The McKeeney Sisters, a Milan-based vocal quartet specialising in 1940s swing and close harmony.
The stories told in the play come directly from the team members' own families, passed down memories of wartime Milan that shaped the script and staging. This diverse group found common ground in their passion for storytelling and their deep connection to the city.
It's this blend of personal history and varied expertise that gives the production its texture and emotional truth.
